cotton and silk woven onto glazed porcelainFrançois Ghebaly
Description
Human-crafted. AI-refined.

This intricate sculptural work features a dynamic, organic form reminiscent of a marine creature. The piece is predominantly composed of a mottled pattern of dark and light tones, creating a striking visual texture. The overall shape is angular and asymmetrical, with protruding appendages that seem to suggest movement or a sense of liveliness. The artist's technical approach appears to emphasize the material qualities of the work, perhaps hinting at themes of natural forms and the relationship between organic and inorganic elements. This unconventional sculpture invites the viewer to consider the intersection of art, nature, and the creative process. ...

Artist
Em Kettner
B.1988, American

Em Kettner’s miniature, figurative sculptures are contextualised by the artist’s experience of muscular dystrophy, intimacy and the fragility of embodied interdependence. She weaves silk and cotton threads onto fragmented porcelain structures, creating tiny beds and colourfully-patterned surfaces, leaving out the limbs and heads of her tiny characters. Whether sickbeds or love-beds or both, the sculptures and their figures reference the physical fragility and mutual support of Kettner’s experience. The miniature scale of her works alludes to votative objects placed on altars as pleas for the relief of pain or illness. Eroticism, religion, joy and ecstasy intertwine in the artist’s delicate figures, challenging the idea of a “normal” body and the hurtful stereotypes about the disability community.
