Description
Human-crafted. AI-refined.

The artwork features a minimalist composition of a solid black background with a small framed photograph mounted in the center. The photograph depicts two individuals, likely a couple, standing together in what appears to be a public space. The overall style is characterized by its stark contrast and simplicity, drawing attention to the single, isolated photographic element against the expansive black surface. This work may allude to themes of identity, memory, or the juxtaposition of the individual and the collective within a broader societal context. ...

Sable Elyse Smith
B.1986, American

Sable Elyse Smith’s interdisciplinary practice spans photography, painting, video, text, neon and sculpture. Often using language to highlight its performative aspect, the artist blends that which is political, public and personal to reveal institutional violence in the contexts of the carceral and court systems, correction facilities and racial injustices. Smith combines the imagery of mass incarceration with unexpected metaphors, such as an intimate touch of a lover, children’s colouring books or playgrounds. The contrast produced is at once uncanny and familiar: while not physically spoken of, the violence that Smith’s work reveals is entrenched, normalised in everyday public consciousness.
